# Changing the hostname, and display name of a VPS

## What is a hostname?

A hostname is a human-readable label assigned to a server or device on a network, making it easier to identify and access than using IP addresses alone. For example, instead of remembering "192.0.2.15", you can use "webserver1.example.com" to connect to your machine. Hostnames are particularly useful when managing multiple servers, as they provide a consistent way to reference each one even if IP addresses change.

## How can I change the hostname of a VPS? 

Start by logging in to our [virtualization panel](https://virt.crunchbits.com/), then clicking `Manage` next to the VPS that you'd like to protect.

Then you'll be presented with a management screen, on which at the top-left, you'll see a cog icon. Please click on that icon.&#x20;

Then you'll be presented with a screen that will let you change the VPS display name \[1], as well as the hostname \[2].

Once you make the appropriate changes to the above, just click on the `Save` button, and the changes will be automatically done.
